Maltz Jupiter Theatre/Asolo Repertory Theatre

The Opportunity: Direct this co-production, written by my Northwestern classmate, John Logan. The set had to work for both the Maltz and the Asolo. Create an imagined interior for Mark Rothko's 222 Bowery studio, late 50's into early 60's. No photos exist of the actual interior. We took what we knew, such as the exterior of the building, combined that with the needs of the play. We made the studio an evocation of Rothko's work. A shadowy, glowing 'light box' which vibrated like the Seagram Murals themselves. Rothko's assistant describes his studio as a "...goddamn hermetically sealed submarine with all the windows closed and no natural light — BECAUSE NATURAL LIGHT ISN’T GOOD ENOUGH FOR YOU!"
